Facing Life By Ryan Yeske I raced down the highway in the stolen truck. I could faintly hear the sounds of sirens behind me; but they are too far away to catch up to me. This was getting too easy. I’d been pulling off robbery after robbery and had never been close to getting caught. I was the world’s most wanted criminal. Not a single witness ever escaped, a camera never caught a glimpse of my face, and no trace of my presence was left behind. I could roam the streets in freedom, never having to worry about being recognized. I pulled my truck off the road, into the hidden dirt trail of the forest. I entered my hideout with my bag of stolen goods. I had just pulled off one of my biggest robberies. I robbed the mansion of Juan Garcon, the 20 year old billionaire. As well as taking 10 million dollars from his vault, I filled a bag of items that could be worth millions of dollars a piece. Carefully, I emptied the bag onto a table. Golden crowns and plates fitted with diamonds and jewels poured out of the bag. As I picked the bag up to put it away, I could feel the weight of one more thing deep in the corner. I reached in to grab it. As my fingers touched it, a tingly chill ran through my body. I pulled it out. It was a sparkling glass bottle, cold as ice. On the side, there was a platinum plate with a small inscription on it. It read ‘The Fountain of Youth. Take one drink, and live forever’. I stared at the bottle in awe. One drink from this, and I could live forever. I was 37 years old and not getting any younger. Soon enough I wouldn’t be able to pull of heists and run from the police, and I would be an old man with nothing to make of the rest of my life. If I had all the time in the world, I could do anything I wanted. I could make something out of my life and stop being a criminal. I had all the money I needed; I could just start over. I took the lid off the bottle. A fresh aroma filled my nostrils as I put it to my lips. I gave one last look around the room at the life I had given myself; the life I would happily trade away for a second chance. I tipped back the bottle and filled my mouth with the water. It tasted better than anything I could have imagined. It was as sweet as honey, but at the same time as sour as biting into a lemon. My tongue tingled with the refreshing taste of the water. I savoured every last drop of water in the bottle, enjoying the cold liquid trickle down my throat. I opened my eyes and the room was spinning. My head became light, and my feet gave out from under me. A smile spread across my face as I hit the floor, then blacked out. I woke up to the sound of shouting. For a second I tried to remember what happened; then I saw the empty bottle of the Fountain of Youth and it all came back; the robbery, me finding the water, and then drinking it. I was immortal. “He’s in here!” yelled a strong, unfamiliar voice from another room. Instinctively, I jumped up to run, but was immediately tackled by a group of men. Something sharp cut my arm. It was a police badge. I sat in a small room in the courthouse waiting for my trial. It turned out I had been followed home by a ghost car. I was being charged with 139 armed-robberies, 25 counts of extortion, and 33 counts of 1st degree murder. I hear my name called; they were ready to sentence me. Two very large men walked into the room and dragged me to the courtroom. The judge, a very large intimidating man, sat there with a frown on his face. He stated a very long list of all my crimes before ruling me guilty. I was to be immediately placed in a high security jail... for life. It seemed like I had been sitting in that prison cell forever; and it may as well had been. I didn’t know how old I was; I stopped keeping track around my 600th birthday. I never had a cell mate, so my only contact to human life was the guard that brought me food. Week after week, a group of scientists would come and try and figure out what was keeping me alive. When I told them about the Fountain of Youth, they just figured I was crazy after being locked up after all this time. It didn’t really matter; I figured someday I’d have a chance to escape. And it didn’t matter when; I had all the time in the world.
